Listening to Students

From Dave Obst, an elementary LD/EBD teacher in Austin, Minnesota:

"When two or more students are brought to me for out of control quarreling in an unstructured setting like noon recess I listen to their stories individually. I talk to each student in private. With a piece of paper titles '______'s Story' I write down everthing the student has to say. Students take their time so I can write everything. By listening to them in entirety, each student gets a feeling that he or she is imprtant. By taking time to get the whole story, the students get a chance to settle down and time to think about what happened without the sense of being punished. The stories are reviewed. The student and I sign each story for documentation of authenticity. Usually the students sit together to have the episode reviewed. Explanations, expectations, mutual understandings, and consequences are given in the group or as students are individually dismissed. A copy of each story is usually given to the principal, classroom teacher, and the playground supervisors."
